Senator Colin Deacon rises in the Chamber to celebrate a recent announcement of a $200M, all-Canadian, investment fund launched by Communitech. Canada has the 2nd largest and fastest-growing innovation cluster globally, but loses home-grown companies to the United States due to limited Canadian investment & procurement. Senator Deacon stresses the importance of global Canadian tech leaders like Communitech, who are supporting Canadian founders with the capital needed to scale, grow and become globally competitive winners. In his speech on the Budget Implementation Act 2021, Bill C-30, Senator Deacon emphasizes the importance of early learning and child care as well as the initiative to accelerate the digitization of small- and medium-sized enterprises in the budget, the influence of the Retail Payment Activities Act, how regulatory changes reduce credit card fraud and costs for small business and consumers, and most fundamentally, of the importance of incentivizing and supporting competition in the Canadian economy.

At the second reading of Bill C-10, An Act to amend the Broadcasting Act and to make related and consequential amendments to other Acts, Senator Deacon emphasizes the need to ensure that C-10 strengthens the future of Canadian media and content creation without creating issues of competing and conflicting privacy and competition laws. Senator Deacon argues for the empowerment of the private sector with an agile regulatory framework that generates recurring revenue and encourages global competitiveness, in order to best support the prosperity, creativity, culture and competition of Canadian media.

Bill C-208, An Act to Amend the Income Tax Act (transfer of small business or family farm or fishing corporation), addresses an anti-avoidance rule in our Income Tax Act that unjustly burdens those wishing to complete genuine intergenerational transfers of a family-owned small business, farm or fishing operation.
